Kolkata, August 10: Political rhetoric has intensified in West Bengal following the alleged attack on former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s convoy. Banerjee was en route to meet the family of a deceased TMC worker, who the party claims died under suspicious circumstances while in police custody.
In response to the incident, BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar has denied any involvement from his party. He stated, “The BJP has nothing to do with this incident.” He further emphasized that if the BJP were engaged in such politics, many legislators would have faced violence, yet no such incidents have occurred. “All are safe in their homes; no councilor has been beaten, and no property has been destroyed,” he added.
Majumdar asserted that the BJP believes in democracy and criticized the TMC for attempting to lecture them on democratic values. He condemned the attack on a former Chief Minister or any female leader, stating that throwing mud and stones is unacceptable. He assured that the police would take appropriate action in this matter.
On the other hand, TMC MP Dola Sen has leveled serious accusations against the police and the BJP regarding the incident. She claimed that stones were thrown at Banerjee’s convoy while she was visiting the family of the deceased party worker. “We never imagined that such an attack could happen to her,” Sen remarked, expressing concern for Banerjee’s safety during the incident.
TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee directly accused the BJP, stating, “These are BJP people. They say one thing publicly and do another privately.” He claimed that the law and order situation in West Bengal has deteriorated, alleging that BJP members began throwing large stones at Banerjee’s vehicle before she arrived at the victim’s home.
Kalyan Banerjee described the stone-throwing as an attempt on Banerjee’s life, asserting that hundreds of BJP workers were present at the scene while the police remained passive. He also accused Suvendu Adhikari of orchestrating the attack.
