Patna, February 14: The central government’s decision to mandate the singing or playing of all six verses of ‘Vande Mataram‘ at official events has sparked a heated political debate. Reactions from various political and social organizations are emerging in response to this decision.
On one hand, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has welcomed this initiative, while some Muslim organizations have expressed their opposition. The Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind has voiced objections to the mandate. In a strong rebuttal, BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh criticized the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind’s stance.
Chugh stated that ‘Vande Mataram‘ is India’s national song with a glorious history. It symbolizes sacrifice, dedication, and devotion to the motherland. He praised the central government’s guidelines, noting that millions of revolutionaries chanted ‘Vande Mataram‘ during the freedom struggle, sacrificing their lives for the nation.
The BJP leader emphasized that this song transcends religion, sect, and caste, embodying the spirit of patriotism. He urged people to respect rather than oppose it, as it represents the unity and integrity of the nation.
Meanwhile, Shiv Sena spokesperson Krishna Hegde remarked, “‘Vande Mataram‘ means saluting and praising one’s mother, celebrating Bharat Mata. Bharat Mata shelters and protects us. Organizations like Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, whose office bearers and leaders reside in India, should not view our national song ‘Vande Mataram‘ through a religious lens. They should have no objection to praising the country.”
In fact, Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind General Secretary Maulana Mohammad Hakimuddin Qasmi stated that the Constitution grants every citizen the right to practice, promote, and live according to their faith. He argued that compelling someone to recite a particular poem or verse against their religious beliefs is not in line with the spirit of the Constitution.
