New Delhi, August 17: The political uproar surrounding Congress leader Sonia Gandhi‘s reaction during the playing of ‘Vande Mataram‘ at the AICC headquarters shows no signs of abating. On Monday, NDA leaders asserted that disrespecting ‘Vande Mataram’ is an affront to the nation, demanding an apology from the Congress leadership.
Central Minister Jayant Chaudhary, speaking from Kolkata, stated, “Everyone should respect the law passed by Parliament regarding ‘Vande Mataram’ and honor the sentiments of the people. I fail to understand why Sonia Gandhi acted this way.”
In Delhi, BJP MP Praveen Khandelwal referenced a viral video, claiming it clearly depicted the disrespect shown to ‘Vande Mataram’ at the Congress headquarters. He remarked, “We all saw the video where ‘Vande Mataram’ was disrespected. Whether it is ‘Vande Mataram’ or our national anthem ‘Jana Gana Mana’, it is essential to stand whenever they are played or sung. However, Sonia Gandhi’s actions during ‘Vande Mataram’ were a direct insult.”
Telangana BJP President N. Ramchandra Rao also expressed strong disapproval. He said, “Sonia Gandhi’s behavior while ‘Vande Mataram’ was being sung has drawn condemnation across the country. This was visible on TV screens, and everyone witnessed it. Even people in Bengal, where ‘Vande Mataram’ was written, were very upset. The entire nation is angry.”
He demanded, “Now, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Kharge must apologize to the nation for disrespecting ‘Vande Mataram’. It is our national song, and it should be sung in full at every event and everywhere.”
Chhattisgarh’s Deputy CM Vijay Sharma commented, “I saw this and found it strange. At a time when one should stand in a posture of respect, there were calls to stop the singing. How can it be acceptable to ask people in India to stop singing ‘Vande Mataram’?”
In Mumbai, Shiv Sena leader Manisha Kayande labeled the incident as criminal. She stated, “This is wrong. It is a crime. A case should be filed against them because ‘Vande Mataram’ is our patriotic national song, and attempting to stop it in this manner is completely unacceptable.”
Meanwhile, BJP National Spokesperson C. R. Kesavan in Hyderabad remarked, “Sonia Gandhi’s serious mistake in trying to stop the singing of ‘Vande Mataram’ is an act that cannot be defended. This was not a mere oversight; it was disgraceful. She should be held fully accountable for disrespecting our national song ‘Vande Mataram’. In 1905, British rule banned the public singing of ‘Vande Mataram’ and declared it a crime. Unfortunately, the Congress’s mindset today seems to mirror that of British rule.”
