Kolkata, August 6: In a significant development, police in Durgapur, located in West Bengal‘s Paschim Bardhaman district, discovered a trolley filled with cash at an abandoned brick kiln on Wednesday. The operation was part of an investigation into a theft case.
According to police reports, over ₹48 lakh in cash was found in the trolley. The raid took place late Tuesday night at the Chandradanga brick kiln, situated in the Faridpur police station area of Durgapur.
The investigation began following a burglary reported on August 1 at the residence of Manoranjan Pal in Gourbazar village, Bankura district. Manoranjan, who operates a rice mill, informed the police that his brother-in-law had entrusted him with a trolley full of cash, which was subsequently stolen by the burglars. He also alleged that some gold jewelry was taken along with the trolley.
After receiving the complaint, police initiated searches across various locations in the district. Acting on a tip-off, they conducted the raid at the brick kiln and recovered the trolley. However, it remains unclear whether the cash is linked to the burglary at Manoranjan’s home.
Authorities are also investigating who left the trolley at the brick kiln and when. A senior officer from the Asansol-Durgapur police commissionerate stated, “An investigation is ongoing to determine whether the money found at the deserted brick kiln was stolen from the complainant’s house or if it originated from another source.”
Notably, over ₹50 lakh was seized during a naka checking operation in Kolkata this April, with similar cash recoveries reported across various regions of the state in recent days. Recently, a search at the residence of a relative of stone trader Tulu Mandal in Birbhum led to the recovery of gold and cash valued at ₹50 crore. Additionally, a substantial amount of cash was also seized in Malda district a few days ago, alongside several lakh rupees recovered in Durgapur.
