Beijing, August 5: The spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Defense, Tan Shi, responded to questions regarding Japan’s 2026 Defense White Paper on August 4.
Tan Shi stated that Japan’s new defense white paper is rife with misconceptions. It exaggerates the “security crisis in the surrounding areas” and promotes the so-called “threat from China.” This serves as a pretext for Japan to ease its military restrictions. China expresses strong dissatisfaction and opposition to this document.
The spokesperson noted that Japanese officials have accelerated amendments to the “three security documents” under the guise of a “defense-centered policy.” They have continuously increased defense spending and vigorously developed long-range attack capabilities. Additionally, Japan is advancing the militarization of space and transforming the battlefield. The expansion of its military industry is even presented as a factor for economic development. Japan’s “new type of militarism” poses a serious challenge to the post-World War II international order and represents a real threat to regional peace and stability.
Tan Shi emphasized that the Taiwan issue relates to China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the political foundation of China-Japan relations. This is a “red line” that must not be crossed. He urged Japan to reflect deeply on its history of aggression, cease interference in China’s internal affairs, and stop misleading the Japanese people and the international community to avoid further straying down the path of “remilitarization.”
