Kolkata, June 10: The West Bengal police conducted a search operation at the Suruchi Sangh Club in South Kolkata on Tuesday. This follows the arrest of Swaroop Biswas, brother of former state minister Arup Biswas, in a harassment case that has sparked controversy.
Investigators brought the arrested Swaroop to the club on Tuesday afternoon. Earlier, central forces had cordoned off the Suruchi Sangh premises and surrounding areas in New Alipur for a thorough search.
Former minister Arup Biswas is currently on the run, while his brother Swaroop was apprehended a few days ago. Multiple allegations have also surfaced against them within the Bengali film industry.
The Suruchi Sangh Club in South Kolkata is known for hosting Durga Puja celebrations and events attended by celebrities. It is alleged that the club is involved in several illegal activities orchestrated by the Biswas brothers.
Following a change in government in the state, police action against both brothers commenced. Swaroop Biswas was arrested, leading to local residents vandalizing the Suruchi Sangh Club.
Protesters gathered outside the premises last Friday and even entered the building. Local residents have accused the club of embezzling government goods. A significant number of bottles of ‘Prandhara’ water, supplied by the government, and several sarees were recovered from a room adjacent to the clubhouse, reinforcing allegations of large-scale irregularities.
Additionally, it has been claimed that a separate building of the club was constructed by encroaching on LIC land, causing public outrage in the area.
On Monday, police recovered several electronic devices and documents from Arup Biswas’s flat in New Alipur. After unlocking a digital safe, investigators seized 14 mobile phones, two iPads, and numerous documents related to an organization in the Bengali film industry. Police stated that these devices could hold crucial evidence.
