
Mumbai, August 18: In a dramatic turn of events late Monday night, a police encounter occurred in Shamli during a routine vehicle check. The operation led to the arrest of Gautam, a notorious criminal with a bounty of ₹25,000 on his head, who sustained a gunshot wound to his right leg during the confrontation.
According to reports, the Shamli police, stationed under the Simbhalkha underpass, spotted a speeding motorcycle approaching from Meerut. When officers signaled the rider to stop, he opened fire on the police team. This prompted a chase, which ended when the motorcycle skidded on Chakarod. Despite falling, the suspect fired again at the police, who returned fire, injuring him in the leg.
The injured criminal was apprehended and taken to the hospital for treatment. Authorities recovered a .315 bore pistol, two spent cartridges, two live rounds, and a motorcycle without a license plate from his possession. Gautam was wanted in connection with a life-threatening attack that occurred on July 5, for which a reward had been announced for his capture.
The police were conducting checks under the Simbhalkha underpass on the night of the incident. As the motorcycle approached from Meerut, the rider fired at the police and attempted to flee towards Balwa Chowk. The police pursued him, but he veered off the main road onto a path leading to Balwa village.
The suspect fell when his motorcycle skidded, and as the police closed in, he fired again. In self-defense, the police returned fire, injuring him in the right leg. After he fell, the police surrounded him and made the arrest, subsequently transporting him to the hospital.
Gautam, identified as the son of Azad from Lilaun, was wanted for the attempted murder of Ravindra Kumar. Reports indicate that Gautam and his accomplice, Vineet alias Sony, had verbally assaulted Ravindra outside his home. When confronted, they opened fire. Following the incident, Vineet was arrested and jailed, while Gautam remained at large.
According to police records, Gautam has 13 cases registered against him across various police stations in Shamli district. These include charges of murder, attempted murder, assault, violations of the Arms Act, Gangster Act, and the Prevention of Goonda Act, along with NDPS Act-related offenses. His criminal history dates back to 2009, and authorities are now investigating his contacts and the sources of his weapons during his time on the run.
