Surat, September 17 (Daily Kiran) : Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday has sparked reflections on the significant changes in the welfare and rehabilitation of the differently abled, shared by Padma Shri awardee Kanubhai Hasmukhbhai Taylor. The 72-year-old social worker expressed his hopes for the Prime Minister’s long life, referring to him as a “Krishna Avatar.”
Taylor noted that there has been a substantial shift in government and societal attitudes towards individuals with disabilities under Modi’s leadership. Rather than viewing them solely as recipients of aid, the focus has shifted to fostering self-reliance. He remarked that before Modi’s tenure, government assistance for the differently abled was primarily limited to food and financial support. However, Modi has redefined this approach, emphasizing skill development and employment opportunities.
“The mindset should be to teach a differently abled person not just to receive a roti, but to learn how to make it,” Taylor stated. This change has not only boosted the self-esteem of individuals with disabilities but has also enhanced their respect within society.
In the past, many families regarded differently abled children as burdens. Today, those who secure jobs or engage in self-employment contribute to their family’s financial responsibilities. Taylor highlighted this as a testament to the growing self-respect among the differently abled.
On the occasion of Modi’s birthday, Taylor mentioned that an old age home for the differently abled in Bharuch is nearing completion, with only about five percent of the work remaining. Approximately ₹28 crores have already been invested in this project. He expressed hope that the Prime Minister would inaugurate the facility, which aims to provide elderly individuals with disabilities a dignified life and essential services.
The government is implementing programs to assist elderly individuals with disabilities who lack adequate food and care, with plans to support around 200 such individuals. Additionally, on Modi’s birthday, Taylor’s organization will distribute wheelchairs to 76 differently abled individuals. They also provide meals for children at their school and plan various social events to commemorate the occasion.
Taylor emphasized that differently abled individuals should not be relegated to begging on the streets or living in railway stations; they deserve opportunities to live with dignity and self-sufficiency. He described Modi’s policies as steps in this direction.
Expressing personal admiration for the Prime Minister, Taylor noted that he has never encountered someone as dedicated as Modi in his 72 years. He prayed for Modi’s longevity and continued service to the nation.
Taylor concluded by stating that fostering respect and confidence among the differently abled is a collective societal responsibility. He underscored the importance of the policy changes initiated by Modi, from being the Chief Minister of Gujarat to becoming the Prime Minister, highlighting the need to view differently abled individuals not as objects of pity but as capable and respected members of society.
