New Delhi, August 22: Sunil Sethi, Chairman of the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI), recently praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for elevating Indian fashion to new heights and giving it a global identity. During an event held at the Habitat Centre, he expressed his sentiments regarding the significant progress Indian fashion has made in recent years.
Sethi thanked PM Modi for his role in promoting Indian fashion. He stated, “The way Prime Minister Modi has advanced this cause is exemplary. The gifts he presents to dignitaries are often based on Indian crafts and textiles, which receive worldwide acclaim. It brings me immense joy when he does this.”
Highlighting his attire, Sethi remarked, “It’s not just about his work; it’s also about the beauty that has garnered admiration for Indian art globally. I want to mention that the ‘Odisha Ikat’ I’m wearing was crafted by an Indian fashion designer. My tie and shirt were also made by Indian designers present here today. We take pride in what we wear because we are Indian.”
He also referenced a letter from New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, who acknowledged the success of two shows held there that celebrated the contributions of Khadi to the country.
Sethi elaborated on Khadi’s international reach, stating, “The real story is that we have attempted to globalize Khadi. This means we have taken it to Bhutan, where the king and queen praised it. We showcased it at Moscow Fashion Week, and people in France have used our Khadi for their shows. Just three days ago, four designers held a spectacular show in Auckland, New Zealand, which was very well received, with a packed audience.”
According to Sethi, people no longer view India as just an ordinary country; its beauty is reflected in its clothing and art.
Paying tribute to Professor Ramroop’s skills, Sethi said, “We are here at the Habitat Centre to honor him. He is truly considered the god of bespoke tailoring in ‘Savile Row.’ I call him a god because he is of Indian origin. It’s inspiring to see his achievements spanning India, Trinidad, Tobago, and England.”
Notably, an event dedicated to renowned personalities was held in the national capital on Sunday. It celebrated the life challenges of master tailor Professor Andrew M. Ramroop, during which a book titled ‘Bespoken’ was launched at the India Habitat Centre. The event was led by FDCI Chairman Sunil Sethi and attended by Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha Harivansh Narayan Singh.
