New Delhi, August 15: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s year 2026 has been significant in many ways, as India continues to advance under his leadership. This year, PM Modi has broken several previous records, including becoming the longest-serving elected Prime Minister in Indian history.
Under PM Modi’s guidance, 2026 has been crucial for India’s economic strength, technological self-reliance, and global influence. His visit to France and participation in global conferences like ‘India Innovates 2026’ have given India’s startup and technology ecosystem a new international identity.
During his 13th consecutive address from the Red Fort on Independence Day, PM Modi reiterated the goal of making India a developed nation by 2047, emphasizing self-reliance, rapid growth, and the empowerment of youth and women. According to the government, India remains one of the fastest-growing major economies, with a GDP growth rate nearing 7.4%.
Energy and self-reliance have also been key achievements for the government. India set a record for adding the highest solar energy capacity in a single year, further solidifying its position in renewable energy.
There has been a notable surge in technology and innovation as well. The number of space startups in the country has reached approximately 400, with increased private participation in the space sector.
On the governance and policy reform front, Parliament passed a law regulating the authority of states to impose new taxes, cesses, or levies in the mineral sector, paving the way for a more equitable tax system for industries and investments.
In sports, India secured fourth place in the 2026 Commonwealth Games, winning a total of 39 medals: 13 gold, 17 silver, and 9 bronze. PM Modi met with the victorious athletes to boost their spirits.
On June 10, he set a new record for the longest-serving elected Prime Minister, surpassing Jawaharlal Nehru’s tenure of 4,398 days. However, Nehru still holds the record for the most flag hoisting ceremonies at the Red Fort, with 17 instances.
Additionally, 2026 marks the 150th anniversary of the composition of ‘Vande Mataram.’ For the first time, a special rendition of ‘Vande Mataram’ was performed during the Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort. Thus, the events of August 15 will not only highlight PM Modi’s records but also add a new chapter to the history of India’s Independence Day celebrations.
