Amit Shah Launches ₹8,941 Crore Projects to Revive Yamuna River in Delhi

Amit Shah inaugurated projects worth ₹8,941 crore aimed at cleaning the Yamuna River, promising a cleaner waterway by 2029.

New Delhi, October 22 (Daily Kiran) : Central Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated and laid the foundation for projects worth ₹8,941 crore focused on the revival and cleaning of the Yamuna River in New Delhi on Thursday. He reiterated the government’s commitment to making the Yamuna clean by 2029.

While addressing the gathering, Shah recalled that shortly after his party’s government took office in Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened a significant meeting to present his vision for cleaning the Yamuna to both the Delhi government and the Home Ministry.

He noted, “In such a short time, we have achieved over 40 percent success.”

During the event, Shah announced the inauguration of ten projects and the launch of 33 new initiatives aimed at purifying millions of liters of water to be released into the Yamuna.

The projects include various upgrades to existing sewage treatment plants (STPs) and the establishment of new ones across different regions of Delhi. Additionally, a decentralized STP pumping station has been set up, and work has begun to connect homes to sewer lines.

Shah emphasized, “We are advancing sewer rehabilitation, drainage, and tapping works,” expressing confidence that the Yamuna will be clean before May 2029.

The event was attended by Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor T.S. Sandhu, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, and other dignitaries.

Shah criticized some political parties for engaging in what he termed “politics of excuses,” specifically targeting the previous Aam Aadmi Party government. He stated, “Previous governments in Delhi made excuses that they received no help. We have answers to their every claim, but we will provide those answers after their government in Punjab.”

He accused the former government of only gaining power through protests and corruption. “They played politics over garbage mountains, but our government has worked to reduce those mountains. In the next two years, gardens will replace these heaps of waste,” he asserted.

Shah highlighted that, with the support of Prime Minister Modi‘s government, Delhi’s Gupta administration has removed 2.17 crore metric tons of waste and cleared 100 acres of land from garbage.

He reported a reduction in the height of garbage mounds in Okhla and Bhalswa by 30 to 40 meters, while the Ghazipur mound has decreased by 10 to 15 meters.

The Home Minister claimed that the previous government did not take any substantial action to clean the Yamuna.

“Our government has undertaken world-class projects in areas like Sarai Kale Khan and ITO, including Asita East, Bansera, and Vasudev Ghat,” he noted.

He also mentioned a three-year plan to ensure sewer connections to every home in Delhi, aiming to facilitate the disposal of wastewater and provide access to clean drinking water for all households.
