Ahmedabad, May 11: Prime Minister Narendra Modi commemorated the nuclear tests conducted at Pokhran on May 11, 1998. He emphasized that despite immense pressure from major global powers, India demonstrated a firm resolve to advance its nuclear objectives.
He noted that India conducted two nuclear tests in 1998, the first on May 11 and the second on May 13. Modi stated that no external force can compel this nation and its citizens to bow down.
During the ‘Somnath Amrit Mahotsav’ ceremony, marking 75 years since the reconstruction of the Somnath Temple, PM Modi referenced the 1998 nuclear tests.
Reflecting on these significant historical moments, he highlighted how under the leadership of the late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, India emerged as a global power.
Addressing the gathering after the ‘Kumbhabhishek’ at Somnath Temple, he reiterated that on May 11, India conducted three nuclear tests at Pokhran. Our scientists showcased the nation’s strength and capabilities, creating a stir worldwide.
He explained that major global powers took India’s nuclear capabilities seriously, imposing various economic sanctions and restrictions on the country.
PM Modi remarked that anyone would feel intimidated, especially when major powers unite against them. However, he asserted that India is made of different mettle. After May 11, global powers intensified their scrutiny, but our scientists had already completed their work. Subsequently, two more nuclear tests were conducted on May 13. That day, the world recognized the ‘Atal’ willpower of India’s political leadership.
He stated that despite immense pressure on the nation, the BJP government under Atal Bihari Vajpayee proved that national interests come first, and no power can force us to yield.
The Prime Minister also elaborated on the naming of the nuclear mission as ‘Operation Shakti.’ He explained that this name symbolizes India’s self-confidence and its strengthening strategic position despite numerous challenges. Notably, the Pokhran-I tests on May 18, 1974, and the Pokhran-II tests on May 11 and 13, 1998, positioned India among a select group of nuclear-armed nations. These tests also marked a decisive turning point in the country’s strategic and geopolitical standing.
