New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the centenary celebrations of the Arya Vaidya Sala Charitable Hospital in Kerala on Wednesday. He emphasised the institution’s significant contribution to preserving, safeguarding, and promoting Ayurveda. Recalling the founder Vaidyaratnam P. S. Varier, PM Modi said his vision and dedication to public welfare continue to inspire many today.
Speaking at the event, PM Modi described Kerala’s Arya Vaidya Sala as a living symbol of India’s ancient healing tradition that has served humanity for centuries. He noted that Ayurveda in India has never been confined to any single period or region but has always provided a way to understand life, maintain balance, and harmonise with nature. Currently, Arya Vaidya Sala produces more than 600 Ayurvedic medicines and operates hospitals across various regions of the country, treating patients from over 60 countries worldwide.
The Prime Minister highlighted that the institution has earned people’s trust through its dedicated work. “When people face difficulties, you become a great hope for them,” he said. He added that service is not merely a concept for Arya Vaidya Sala but a heartfelt feeling reflected in their work, vision, and the institution itself. The charitable hospital has been continuously serving people for the past 100 years, thanks to the efforts of its doctors, nurses, and other staff, whom PM Modi felicitated.
PM Modi also referred to government initiatives, stating that for a long time, traditional medical systems were seen in isolation. However, in the last 10 to 11 years, there has been a significant shift towards a holistic approach in healthcare. Ayurveda, Unani, Homeopathy, Siddha, and Yoga have been brought under one umbrella through the creation of the Ministry of AYUSH. Under the National AYUSH Mission, over 12,000 AYUSH wellness centres have been established.
The Prime Minister pointed out the clear impact of government policies on the AYUSH sector, noting rapid growth in AYUSH manufacturing and its wider reach. To promote Indian traditional wellness globally, the government has set up the AYUSH Export Promotion Council. He shared that AYUSH and herbal product exports from India have grown from around ₹3,000 crore in 2014 to ₹6,500 crore now, benefiting farmers across the nation.
PM Modi acknowledged that while Ayurveda has been a part of India’s healing tradition for centuries, there remains a need to educate people in India and abroad about its importance. One major challenge is the lack of evidence-based research and scientific studies on Ayurveda. When Ayurveda is validated through scientific principles, public confidence strengthens.
He urged that Ayurveda should embrace modern technology and artificial intelligence to keep pace with changing times. Innovative efforts can be made in early disease detection and integrating different treatment methods through technology.
