New Delhi, May 6: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is shaping an India that embraces modernity while staying deeply connected to its cultural roots, rather than merely adopting a Western model. This insight was shared by Norwegian diplomat Erik Solheim on Wednesday.
Solheim, a former climate and environment minister in Norway, spoke with a news agency, emphasizing that PM Modi envisions a rapidly advancing India that remains tied to its traditions and heritage, rather than imitating the West.
He stated, “Prime Minister Modi aims to modernize India swiftly, but he does not want to turn the country into a Western one. He desires a great future for India that is based on its history and heritage.”
Solheim noted that Western media often portrays PM Modi negatively, as they fail to understand the role of culture and religion in Indian society.
He remarked that Western institutions tend to view religion and culture with skepticism, while in India, these elements are sources of strength and identity for the people.
According to him, PM Modi’s approach is to build India’s future on its historical and cultural foundations, which are largely linked to Hinduism.
Solheim believes this model presents a unique path for development, balancing modernity with tradition.
While discussing politics, he refrained from commenting on opposition leaders, suggesting that the focus should remain on the electoral outcomes.
He referenced the BJP’s performance in states like West Bengal and Assam, and highlighted the rise of actor-turned-politician Vijay in Tamil Nadu as a significant event.
On India’s global standing, Solheim remarked that the country has predominantly pursued a path of peaceful development. He cited a minor conflict with Pakistan as an example, noting that it was resolved swiftly.
He added that India has not engaged in any major wars, with only a small skirmish with Pakistan, which PM Modi managed to conclude in just a few days. This serves as a lesson for other nations.
