Mumbai, August 7: Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal highlighted India’s rich handloom heritage by presenting handcrafted Jaipur Sanganeri shawls to dignitaries at the BRICS Trade and Industry Ministers’ meeting held in Jaipur on National Handloom Day.
Sharing this moment on the social media platform X, Goyal expressed, “Proudly Indian, Proudly Sanganeri.” He dedicated these handmade shawls to honor Rajasthan’s centuries-old textile tradition and the craftsmanship of local artisans.
On this occasion, Goyal stated, “On National Handloom Day, I presented beautiful handcrafted Jaipur Sanganeri shawls to the esteemed guests at the BRICS India 2026 Trade and Industry Ministers’ meeting. Our skilled artisans are preserving a unique, timeless legacy of craftsmanship.”
The symbolic presentation of Sanganeri shawls coincided with the successful conclusion of the 16th BRICS Trade Ministers’ meeting, hosted under India’s presidency in 2026.
During the meeting, trade ministers and senior officials from all BRICS member countries discussed strengthening economic cooperation, enhancing supply chains, and improving the multilateral trading system.
Renowned for its intricate hand-block printing, natural dyes, and beautiful floral patterns, Sanganeri shawls are among Rajasthan’s most prestigious traditional crafts.
Originating from Sanganer, near Jaipur, this textile art has gained national and international recognition for its distinctive craftsmanship, providing livelihoods to thousands of artisan families.
The presentation also reflected the Indian government‘s emphasis on promoting indigenous crafts and handloom products under the ‘Vocal for Local’ initiative.
Celebrated annually on August 7, National Handloom Day honors India’s ancient weaving traditions and recognizes the contributions of handloom weavers and artisans to the country’s cultural and economic heritage.
By selecting locally made Sanganeri shawls as official gifts for international delegations, India showcased not only Rajasthan’s artistic excellence but also its commitment to preserving and promoting traditional crafts on global platforms.
This initiative further reinforced the message of supporting local artisans while highlighting India’s growing leadership role within the BRICS group and its rich cultural heritage.
