
In the Mumbai Open WTA 125K series qualifiers, Indian Olympian Ankita Raina faced defeat against Thailand’s Peangtarn Plipuech. The intense match took place on Sunday at the Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association (MSLTA) and lasted for 2 hours and 39 minutes, with Plipuech winning 6-2, 1-6, 6-4.
Other players securing their spots in the main draw include Japan’s Matsuda Misaki, Poland’s Juzana Pawlikowska, and Kristiana Sidorova. Matsuda overcame the top-seeded Argentina’s Nicole Fossa Huergo with a 7-5, 6-4 victory in one hour and 33 minutes. Despite a slow start, the Japanese player fought hard to advance.
In a marathon match lasting over three hours, Poland’s Pawlikowska defeated Finland’s Anastasia Kulikova 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), clinching the third set tiebreaker to move into the next round. Meanwhile, Kristiana Sidorova secured her place by beating second seed Yasmin Kabbaj 6-4, 6-2 in the day’s final game.
The main draw will commence on February 2, featuring several Indian players who will compete against international opponents. India’s top-ranked women’s singles player Sahaja Yamalapalli is set to face Japan’s Eri Shimizu. Wildcard entrant Vaidehi Chaudhary will play against France’s third seed Léolia Jeanjean.
Sahaja Yamalapalli earned direct entry into the main draw, while Vaidehi Chaudhary received a wildcard following her recent impressive performances, including winning the W35 Solapur event in December and reaching the WTT 15 final in Ahmedabad in January.
Other wildcard entries include Srivalli Bhamidipati, who will face a qualifier in the opening round, and Maya Rajeshwaran Revathi, who is scheduled to play against Thailand’s Lailana Tararudi. Maharashtra’s No.1 singles player Vaishnavi Adkar will compete against Austria’s Lily Tagger.
