Parents of IIT Bombay Student Continue Hunger Strike Demanding Justice

Mumbai, October 1 (Daily Kiran) : Parents of Sahil Wakode, an IIT Bombay student who recently passed away, are on an indefinite hunger strike in Mumbai’s Azad Maidan. They are demanding justice and the arrest of those involved in their son’s death. This marks the fifth day of their protest.

On Thursday, Prakash Ambedkar, president of the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi, visited the site to meet with Sahil’s parents. He emphasized the family’s call for justice, highlighting Sahil’s promising academic record as evidence of his potential. Ambedkar expressed concern over the police investigation, describing it as disappointing. He pointed out that individuals accused in the case have yet to be summoned for questioning or presented in court.

Ambedkar also raised questions about the possible involvement of the Chief Minister, suggesting that such a police investigation could not proceed without the Chief Minister’s directives.

Sahil’s father, Ravindra Wakode, expressed gratitude for the support they have received from the government. He noted that officials have been regularly visiting them, acknowledging the gravity of their son’s situation. Ravindra remains hopeful that justice will prevail and appreciates the community’s solidarity during this challenging time. He reiterated their commitment to the hunger strike until justice is served.

Nikhil Kamble, the family’s attorney, provided updates on the protest’s legal aspects. He confirmed that all necessary permits for the demonstration were obtained in accordance with legal guidelines. However, he mentioned potential delays in permissions due to the upcoming Gandhi Jayanti holiday.

Kamble also addressed concerns regarding the family’s safety, having previously written to the police commissioner for protection, given that the accused have not yet been arrested. He expressed disappointment over the lack of communication from law enforcement regarding their safety.

The attorney raised further questions about the investigation’s progress, noting that the family has not been able to communicate with the Crime Branch due to their ongoing hunger strike. Consequently, they have not received any updates on the case, relying primarily on media reports for information.
