Islamabad, March 28: Amid rising tensions between the U.S. and Iran, Pakistan’s attempts to position itself as a mediator have faced significant setbacks. Iran not only returned a Pakistani tanker but also denied it passage through the Strait of Hormuz. Furthermore, Tehran rejected Pakistan’s mediation offers and U.S. ceasefire proposals.
A recent report highlights Pakistan’s diminishing effectiveness in the Gulf region. It suggests that Pakistan’s “propaganda-based diplomacy” is undermining its actual diplomatic strength rather than enhancing its image.
The report indicates that Pakistan often presents its diplomatic activities as more significant than they are, relying on noise rather than genuine strategic importance. Such efforts to bolster its role in the Gulf are branding Pakistan more as a “propagandist” than a serious mediator.
According to the findings, Pakistan’s diplomacy is primarily based on symbolic outreach and ideological appeal. However, both factors are weakening over time. For effective diplomacy, credibility and strategic relevance are essential, which are increasingly lacking in Pakistan’s case.
The report cites Qatar as an example, noting its establishment as a “trustworthy mediator.” Qatar has maintained dialogue with opposing parties such as the U.S., Iran, the Taliban, and Hamas, enhancing its credibility.
In contrast, Pakistan’s diplomacy heavily relies on media and ideological propaganda, lacking a solid strategic foundation. This has led to a continuous decline in its credibility as a mediator.
Additionally, the report mentions that Pakistan’s role in reducing long-standing tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran has been minimal. Former Prime Minister Imran Khan made several mediation offers, all of which were rejected by Saudi Arabia. Ultimately, a 2023 agreement between the two nations was brokered by China, with Pakistan playing no significant role.
In the Afghan peace process, Pakistan also positioned itself as a key mediator, but its relations with the Taliban and TTP have deteriorated over time, further weakening its influence.
The report concludes that Pakistan cannot become an effective global mediator solely through ideological appeal and propaganda-based diplomacy. It must strengthen its credibility, relevance, and strategic role to achieve this goal.
