Quetta, March 24: A troubling case of enforced disappearance has emerged in Balochistan, highlighting the alarming trend of youth going missing and extrajudicial killings in the region. On Monday, a prominent human rights organization condemned the actions of the Pakistani army regarding this incident.
According to sources, the Baloch National Movement’s human rights department reported that Mumtaz Baloch was forcibly taken by personnel from Pakistan’s Frontier Corps in the Absar area of Turbat, Kech district. Mumtaz is a student in the Balochi language and literature department at the University of Balochistan.
An eyewitness stated that Mumtaz was detained without any legal warrant or due process, and his whereabouts remain unknown.
As per the Baloch National Movement, Mumtaz Baloch hails from the Zik Geshkor area of Awaran district and is known among his peers for his dedication to the preservation and promotion of the Balochi language and literature. His disappearance reflects a disturbing pattern in Balochistan, where intellectuals, students, and ordinary citizens are often arbitrarily detained and made to disappear.
The human rights organization stated, “Such actions not only violate fundamental human rights but also suppress intellectual freedom and cultural expression. Enforced disappearances are a clear violation of international human rights laws, which include the right to protection against arbitrary detention and the right to a fair trial.”
The organization has called on Pakistani authorities to immediately disclose Mumtaz’s whereabouts, ensure his safe release, or present him in court if there are any charges against him. They also demanded an end to the practice of enforced disappearances in Balochistan and accountability for those responsible for these unlawful acts.
The human rights organization urged international bodies, particularly the United Nations Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances, to pay immediate attention to this case and pressure Pakistani authorities to uphold their human rights obligations.
Reiterating their commitment to documenting human rights violations and advocating for justice for victims and their families, the organization stated, “Continued silence and inaction in such cases only emboldens perpetrators and deepens the human rights crisis in Balochistan.”
