New Delhi, March 24: Alex Davis has resigned from his position as captain of Warwickshire. Ed Barnard will take over this role across all formats.
Davis expressed, “Leading the Bears has undoubtedly been one of the proudest periods of my career. Being part of a team capable of winning trophies has been a privilege. To achieve this, I believe I need to perform at my best with both bat and gloves. This is why I am stepping down from captaincy ahead of the 2026 season.”
He added, “I couldn’t hand over the captaincy to anyone better than Ed. When I asked him to be vice-captain two years ago, I knew he would one day become a great captain, and now his time has come. I hope that if he ever needs me, I will stand by him every step of the way. I want to thank all the players and staff for their unwavering support during my tenure, and I look forward to giving my all for the Bears in the future.”
The 31-year-old Davis was appointed captain for the 2024 season. In his debut season, he topped the County Championship batting average with 50.68, scoring a total of 1,115 runs, including four centuries.
Under Davis’s leadership, Warwickshire finished seventh and then fifth in Division 1 of the Championship. Additionally, they topped the Vitality Blast North Group twice but did not progress beyond the quarter-finals.
Barnard, who joined the team from Worcestershire in 2023, is already captaining the One Day team. He has also served as Davis’s vice-captain for the past two seasons in the Championship and Blast. The 30-year-old was named captain of the PCA Men’s Team of the Year 2025, having scored 922 runs and taken 29 wickets in the Championship.
Barnard stated, “I feel very proud and honored to have the opportunity to captain Warwickshire. I fully realize that I am following in the footsteps of some great cricketers and people. Being part of this list is a great honor for me.”
