Japan Urged to Confront the History of Comfort Women

Beijing, March 24: During the 61st session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, independent UN experts and representatives from China and other nations urged Japan to confront the history of ‘Comfort Women.’ They called on the international community to pay serious attention to this issue and to encourage Japan to fulfill its historical responsibilities.

Recently, 16 experts from various UN human rights mechanisms issued a joint press release expressing grave concerns over Japan’s violations of the rights to truth, justice, and compensation for ‘Comfort Women’ victims. They urged Japan to issue a formal apology, provide full compensation, and protect relevant historical records in textbooks.

The experts highlighted that under the so-called ‘Comfort Women’ system, approximately 200,000 women and girls were arbitrarily deprived of their freedom, subjected to human trafficking, rape, and sexual slavery, with some even forcibly disappeared.

Most surviving victims from China, South Korea, the Netherlands, East Timor, Indonesia, and the Philippines have passed away, and the remaining survivors are elderly. The experts stated that Japan has previously failed to achieve victim-centered justice.
