Washington, March 21: A recent report claims that Pakistan is using religion to mask its alleged harsh agenda in Pakistan-administered Gilgit-Baltistan. Sengay Sering, writing for Global Strat View, stated that Pakistan employs religion as a “smoke screen” to obscure its policies that harm the region’s cultural identity and allow it to seize natural resources.
The report warns that if a full-scale war erupts between Iran and Arab nations, the safety of the Shia community in Pakistan could be jeopardized. In this scenario, breaking free from the “two-nation theory” might present a dignified option for the people of Gilgit-Baltistan to align with India.
According to the report, traffic disruptions on the Karakoram Highway this year will not only stem from snowfall or landslides but will also reflect the rising tensions in the region. Conditions worsened following the assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, which sparked violence in Gilgit and Skardu.
On March 1, the Pakistani army opened fire on protesters, resulting in the deaths of 18 individuals, including eight children. A curfew was subsequently imposed to control the situation. Officials claim that protesters killed two soldiers and set several military structures ablaze.
The report also indicates that Pakistan’s law enforcement agencies are actively searching for and arresting dozens of individuals in Gilgit-Baltistan suspected of being linked to an “Iran-supported” religious network.
Police are reportedly conducting nighttime raids on homes, and individuals detained during Ramadan are being held in secret detention centers. Anyone who raises their voice against government policies or possesses the ability to organize is targeted.
Among those arrested are political and cultural activists such as Advocate Ehsan Ali, Engineer Mahboob, Advocate Nafees, Fida Isar, Taroof Abbas, Sheikh Yusuf, Nazar Kazmi, and Shabbir Mayar.
The report suggests that these actions by Pakistan are aimed at controlling rising internal dissent, while the United States and Saudi Arabia hope that the Pakistani military will cooperate in potential military operations against Iran.
Furthermore, the report claims that the Pakistani army is providing intelligence and analytical support to its Western and Arab allies, while also attempting to shape public opinion against Iran through media influence.
The media is accused of portraying Iran as a villain in the context of India-Iran relations and exploiting anti-Hindu sentiments domestically to serve its strategic interests.
