Islamabad, May 6: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif expressed gratitude to U.S. President Donald Trump for the suspension of ‘Project Freedom.’ Pakistan, which has played a mediating role between the U.S. and Iran, termed this a bold move.
Sharif shared his thoughts on the X platform, praising Trump’s “courageous leadership and timely announcement.” He expressed hope that this suspension would facilitate peace, stability, and reconciliation in the region during this sensitive time.
The Pakistani Prime Minister stated, “Pakistan supports all efforts that promote peaceful solutions through dialogue and diplomacy.”
This statement followed Trump’s social media post, where he claimed that, at the request of Pakistan and other nations, he was temporarily halting ‘Project Freedom.’
In a post on Tuesday evening, Trump mentioned that this decision was made considering the requests from Pakistan and other countries, as well as the progress towards a potential peace agreement with Iran. He further stated that ‘Project Freedom’ would be paused for some time to assess whether a final agreement with Iran could be achieved. However, the pressure and blockade imposed by the U.S. on Iranian ports would continue.
The operation was initiated on Monday to provide safe passage for commercial vessels trapped in the Strait of Hormuz. Defense Minister Pete Hegseth had deemed it essential for humanity, but the operation was halted on Tuesday night.
The U.S. Central Command claimed that the operation involved guided missile destroyers, over 100 aircraft and naval vessels, drones, and approximately 15,000 soldiers. According to Commander Admiral Brad Cooper, 87 ships from various countries were stranded in the area, and the U.S. had reached out to several shipping companies to facilitate movement.
