Guwahati, July 20: The flood situation in Assam has worsened, affecting over 57,000 people across eight districts. Tragically, one individual has lost their life in Sivasagar, bringing the total flood-related fatalities in the state this year to five.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the districts impacted include Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Charaideo, Tinsukia, Lakhimpur, Sivasagar, Udalguri, and Jorhat. A total of 22 revenue circles and 298 villages are submerged, with 57,199 individuals affected. Approximately 3,874.84 hectares of agricultural land have also been inundated. The latest reported death occurred in the Amguri revenue circle of Sivasagar district.
The water level of the Burhidihing River in Chenimari (Khowang) remains above the danger mark, although no rivers have reported flows exceeding their highest flood levels.
ASDMA has indicated that 14 relief camps and distribution centers are operational in the affected districts. Around 440 individuals have taken refuge in these camps, while 3,648 people are receiving assistance through distribution centers. Livestock has also been impacted, with 37,558 animals affected, primarily in Dhemaji district.
Officials report that rescue and relief operations are ongoing in sensitive areas. Meanwhile, urban flooding continues to affect parts of Jorhat district.
Several areas, including two revenue circles and villages such as Bohotia, Nausolia, Bor Ahom, Sonari, Chirotia, West Bongal Pukhuri, Tarajan Sonari, Rajamaidam, TRP Road, Parijat Nagar, Atilagaon, and Kushar Nagar, are submerged, impacting approximately 1,831 individuals due to urban flooding.
Authorities state that the district administration is closely monitoring the situation in collaboration with disaster relief agencies to provide assistance to affected residents.
