BRICS Emerges as a Voice for the Global South, Says Former Diplomat Sudhir T. Deore

Former diplomat Sudhir T. Deore highlights BRICS as a platform for the Global South, emphasizing its growing influence and unity.

New Delhi, September 15 (Daily Kiran) : Former diplomat Sudhir T. Deore has underscored the significance of the recent BRICS summit, describing it as a crucial platform for the Global South. He noted that the conference brought together not only major nations but also those from the Global South that often lack a voice on the world stage. According to Deore, BRICS has evolved into a group that champions its own interests rather than positioning itself against others, representing nearly 50% of the world’s population and 45% of global GDP.

Deore remarked, “ICWA is a national institution that has significantly contributed to discussions on foreign policy. It has introduced new ideas and adapted to changing global dynamics. India faces unique challenges, and its foreign policy has continuously evolved, reflecting the contributions of ICWA.” He emphasized the importance of ICWA in bridging the gap between India and diplomatic experience.

He pointed out that as a national institution, ICWA unites universities, academic bodies, and individuals, all of whom are open to sharing their thoughts. This collaboration enhances ICWA’s role as a platform for debate and open discourse on foreign policy.

Regarding the BRICS summit, Deore highlighted its ability to bring together influential countries alongside those from the Global South. He noted that these nations, which typically do not have opportunities to speak, were able to voice their concerns at the summit. “BRICS has emerged as a new and significant group representing about 50% of the world’s population and 45% of global GDP,” he stated, adding that it is not anti-Western but rather reflects its own interests.

Deore asserted that the summit was marked by a spirit of peace and dialogue, with no conflicts arising. He believes that BRICS will continue to advocate for its interests in a cooperative manner in the coming years.

He also mentioned the expansion of BRICS, noting that several additional countries have joined the original five. Countries like Egypt, Ethiopia, and South Africa are now members, and Burundi’s president attended as the chair of the African Union. These leaders engaged in discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, showcasing the growing influence of BRICS on the international stage.

As the BRICS group continues to evolve, it represents not just a coalition of major powers like China and Russia, but also a significant number of nations from the Global South, forming a new and impactful voice within a larger non-aligned movement.
