Over 4,300 Flights Canceled Amid Rising Tensions in West Asia: Government Report

New Delhi, March 16: Ongoing tensions in West Asia have led to the cancellation of thousands of flights by both Indian and foreign airlines. This information was shared by Union Civil Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu in the Lok Sabha on Monday.

Speaking on the sixth day of the ongoing budget session, the minister revealed that Indian airlines have canceled over 4,335 flights, while foreign airlines have grounded approximately 1,187 flights.

The minister emphasized that the safety of passengers remains the top priority for both the government and airlines. He explained that operating flights in airspace that has been closed due to conflict is not feasible.

He stated, “Indian airlines have canceled 4,335 flights, and foreign airlines have also canceled 1,187 flights. Safety must always come first. If an area’s airspace is closed, there is no question of operating flights there.”

Despite the impact of the situation in West Asia, a significant number of passengers have still traveled during this period. According to the minister, around 219,780 passengers have taken to the skies even amid the tensions.

Ram Mohan Naidu also mentioned that India’s aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), and the Ministry of Civil Aviation are in constant contact with officials in the affected regions to monitor the situation closely.

He noted that flight services will resume normally only when the airspace in those regions is reopened, as restrictions are currently in place in several areas.

Meanwhile, last week, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murleedhar Mohol reported that over 11,000 pilots are currently employed by major domestic airlines in India, including approximately 1,900 female pilots.

In a written response to the Lok Sabha on March 12, he stated that there are a total of 11,394 pilots working in Indian airlines, with 1,871 being female pilots.
