New Delhi, March 31: The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas announced on Tuesday that efforts are ongoing to enhance the availability of cooking gas amid disruptions in LPG imports due to the Iran conflict. In March, over 310,000 PNG connections were gasified, covering domestic, commercial, hostel, and canteen sectors, with an additional 270,000 new connections being gasified.
Since March 1, 2026, more than 5 million domestic LPG cylinders have been distributed daily, with no reports of shortages among LPG distributors. Additionally, the ministry stated that over 320,000 5-kilogram cylinders have been sold to migrant workers since March 23, with more than 63,000 sold on Monday alone.
For piped natural gas (PNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG) for vehicles, priority has been given to consumers with 100% supply to meet demand. Supply to grid-connected industrial and commercial consumers is being maintained at approximately 80% of their average consumption.
The statement emphasized that measures have been implemented to ensure the uninterrupted availability of petroleum products and LPG across the country, especially in light of the closure of the Hormuz Strait.
It also noted that all refineries are operating at high capacity with sufficient crude oil reserves, and adequate stocks of petrol and diesel are being maintained while increasing domestic LPG production to meet local consumption.
All petrol pumps nationwide are functioning normally. However, some areas have experienced panic buying due to rumors, leading to unusually high sales and crowds at retail outlets. The statement reassured that ample stocks of petrol and diesel are available at all petrol pumps across the country.
The government has reiterated its advice to the public not to believe in rumors and has requested state governments to disseminate accurate information through press briefings.
Online LPG bookings have surged by nearly 92%, while delivery authentication code (DAC) based deliveries have increased from 53% in February 2026 to the current 83%, helping to curb malpractices.
