Kolkata, October 3 (Daily Kiran) : Tensions erupted in the Gaighata area of North 24 Parganas, West Bengal, after a 13-year-old schoolgirl was discovered hanging in her home. Her family claims that a 32-year-old local man raped her and subsequently blackmailed her, suggesting that the distress from these experiences may have led to her tragic decision.
The eighth-grade student was found dead on Friday night. Authorities were alerted, and police arrived to secure the scene before sending the body for an autopsy. An investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of death.
According to the family, the girl had reportedly been in contact with the man for nearly a year. They allege that a few months prior, he lured her to his home, where her mother claims he locked her in a room. It is alleged that the man sexually assaulted her during this time.
The family further accused the suspect of blackmailing the girl with compromising photos and videos, using them to intimidate her into compliance. The girl’s mother stated that the accused threatened to release these materials if she refused to meet him.
The father of the girl revealed that the family was initially unaware of her association with the man. Once they learned of it, they warned her to sever ties. Despite this, the man allegedly continued to meet with her and even threatened her with acid attacks.
The family also claimed that the girl was forced to wear traditional bangles and was adorned with vermilion at the suspect’s home, asserting that she did not consent to this supposed marriage arrangement. Eventually, her mother brought her back home.
Following the girl’s death, the family lodged a formal complaint at the Gaighata police station, demanding strict action against the accused. Authorities have confirmed that an investigation is ongoing, focusing on the allegations, the circumstances surrounding the girl’s death, and other claims made by the family.
As of now, no arrests have been made, but police are actively looking into the matter.
