Gurjeet Kaur has made history by leading the Indian womens hockey team to its first Olympic semifinals, showcasing her talent and dedication.

New Delhi, October 24 (Daily Kiran) : The Indian women’s hockey team is making waves on the global stage, thanks in large part to the remarkable contributions of players like Gurjeet Kaur. She played a pivotal role in helping the team reach the Olympic semifinals for the first time in history.
Born on October 25, 1995, in Miani Kalan, Amritsar, Punjab, Gurjeet came from a farming family. She has an older sister, Pradeep Kaur. Their father, Satnam Singh, prioritized education for his daughters, sending them to a boarding school in Kairon, located 70 kilometers away in Tarn Taran district.
Kairon is known as one of the oldest and most prestigious hockey nurseries for women, where both sisters discovered their passion for the sport. Gurjeet’s exceptional skills earned her a spot in the school’s government wing, providing her with free education and meals, which alleviated financial burdens for their struggling parents.
Gurjeet continued her education in Kairon until 2011 before moving to Lyallpur Khalsa College for Women in Jalandhar to further her studies and training. It was here that she became serious about drag-flicking. Following her education, she secured a position as a junior clerk with Indian Railways in Allahabad.
After impressive performances at the domestic level, Gurjeet made her debut for the Indian national team in 2014 and has been a key player ever since. As a defender and drag flicker, she has scored 86 goals in 137 matches for India.
Gurjeet was part of the Indian team that won a silver medal at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta. She also contributed to the team that secured a bronze medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Additionally, she played a significant role in the team’s gold medal win at the 2018 Asia Cup and bronze at the 2022 Asia Cup.
Her accolades include silver at the 2018 Asian Champions Trophy, gold at the FIH Nations Cup in Spain in 2022, and gold at the South Asian Games held in Guwahati in 2016.
Notably, Gurjeet scored the only goal against Australia during the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, propelling India into the semifinals of the women’s hockey tournament for the first time.
As she approaches her 31st birthday, Gurjeet remains an active player and a significant role model for aspiring athletes.
