Kolkata, October 3 (Daily Kiran) : Rathindra Bose, the Speaker of the West Bengal Assembly, was admitted to a private hospital in Kolkata on Friday night after experiencing severe chest pain. His condition is reportedly stable as he receives treatment near the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass.
On the day of his hospitalization, Bose attended two events in the assembly complex to commemorate Gandhi Jayanti and the birthday of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri. After participating in various activities throughout the day, he returned home, where he suddenly felt intense chest pain. Family members quickly took him to the hospital, where he began receiving immediate medical attention.
Doctors have conducted several tests on the assembly speaker, and sources from the hospital indicate that his health has gradually improved since treatment commenced. He remains under close medical supervision.
Bose was elected as the assembly speaker by consensus in May, following the formation of a BJP government in West Bengal. A chartered accountant by profession, he made history as the first MLA from North Bengal to hold this position. This is his first term in the assembly, having previously been associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) before entering active politics with the BJP.
In the recent 2026 assembly elections, Bose secured a victory by defeating the Trinamool Congress candidate Abhijit Bhowmik by over 23,000 votes in the Cooch Behar South constituency. His election marked a significant moment, as he became the first speaker in a long time not to come from a legal background.
Recently, he visited Atlanta, where he engaged with the Bengali community on various topics, including West Bengal’s economic development, future prospects, investment opportunities, and improvements in the education sector. During this trip, Bose also shared his thoughts on fostering meaningful legislative debates and creating an environment for democratic dialogue between the ruling party and opposition.
