Outrage in Kolkata After Young Man Dies Due to Alleged Medical Negligence

Kolkata, August 16: Family members have accused the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata of negligence following the death of a young man. The incident occurred on Sunday, prompting the family to take to social media, urging West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and State Health Minister Sharadwat Mukherjee to investigate and reform healthcare services in state hospitals.

The deceased, identified as Pritam Roy, was brought to the trauma care center on Saturday evening around 5:30 PM with severe injuries from a road accident. Hailing from Rajchandrapur in Howrah district, Pritam suffered multiple fractures, including both leg bones and the left hip.

According to sources at RG Kar Hospital, the patient went into ‘hemorrhagic shock’ due to excessive blood loss, leading to his death around 10:30 PM on Saturday.

Shouvik Sarkar, a family member of the deceased, directly accused the RG Kar hospital administration of negligence in treatment. Hospital Superintendent Saptarshi Chatterjee stated that an investigation into the complaint is underway.

Earlier this year in March, another incident involved the death of Aroop Banerjee, who was trapped in a lift at the RG Kar trauma care building, raising concerns about administrative oversight.

Moreover, a shocking incident on August 9, 2024, involving the rape and murder of a female doctor in the emergency department of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital sent shockwaves across the nation. This led to widespread protests, hunger strikes, and demands for justice from various societal groups, questioning the hospital’s security measures.

Subsequently, a meeting with the administration allowed junior doctors to discuss various issues, including infrastructure development and monitoring, with assurances given for improvements.
