Chief Minister Vijay Announces ₹30 Lakh Aid for Family of Deceased Constable

Chennai, August 16: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay announced on Sunday that the family of a police constable, who tragically passed away during duty at the Independence Day parade, will receive financial assistance of ₹30 lakh.

The deceased has been identified as A. Dharmaraj, aged 56. He was serving as a Grade-1 police constable in the band unit of the Tamil Nadu Special Police Regimental Centre located in Avadi.

Dharmaraj was assigned formal duty at the Independence Day celebrations held at Fort St. George. During the parade, he suddenly collapsed and lost consciousness. Immediate assistance was provided by fellow police personnel and officers present at the scene.

He was quickly transported to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai for urgent medical care. Despite the doctors’ efforts to stabilize his condition, he unfortunately did not recover and later succumbed in the hospital.

This incident has cast a shadow of grief over the police department, particularly among officials and staff connected to the Tamil Nadu Special Police and its regimental band unit.

Dharmaraj was entrusted with a significant formal responsibility during one of the state’s most important government events, the Independence Day program.

Expressing deep sorrow over the constable’s death, Chief Minister Vijay stated that Dharmaraj’s passing is an irreplaceable loss not only for his family but also for the Tamil Nadu police force. He praised Dharmaraj’s dedication to duty and his contributions during the Independence Day celebrations.

The Chief Minister extended his condolences to Dharmaraj’s family, relatives, friends, and colleagues in the police department. He assured that the state government stands with the grieving family during this challenging time.

Vijay directed the relevant authorities to provide the ₹30 lakh financial assistance to Dharmaraj’s family. This aid aims to support the dependents following the sudden loss of their primary breadwinner.

Many members of the police force also expressed their condolences over Dharmaraj’s passing. His colleagues remembered him as an officer who fulfilled his duties until his last breath.

The Independence Day parade at Fort St. George features personnel from various branches of the police. The band unit plays a crucial role, being a key part of the march-past and other formal events.
