Organic Farming: The Key to Protecting Our Fields and Environment, Says Dr. Prem Kumar

Gaya, June 16: Bihar Assembly Speaker Dr. Prem Kumar emphasized on Tuesday that organic and natural farming are essential for safeguarding our fields and the environment. He noted that the unbalanced use of chemical fertilizers and the neglect of organic inputs like compost and vermicompost are gradually deteriorating soil health. The organic carbon level has dropped to less than 0.5%, adversely affecting soil fertility.

During the inauguration of the “Natural Farming District Workshop” at the Agricultural Science Center in Manpur, Dr. Kumar addressed farmers, stating that the government is promoting organic farming under the Traditional Agricultural Development Scheme and the National Natural Farming Mission. Additionally, an Organic Farming Incentive Scheme is also being implemented.

Currently, in Gaya district, organic farming is being practiced over 500 hectares by 535 farmers in 25 clusters, with an investment of ₹38.25 lakh. The first phase of organic certification has been completed. Similarly, natural farming is being conducted over 750 hectares at a cost of ₹1.10 crore by 1,875 farmers across 15 blocks, including Manpur, Bodh Gaya, Nagar, and others.

Dr. Kumar urged the farmers present to commit to practicing organic and natural farming on at least 25% of their fields this year, warning that failure to do so could lead to significant challenges in the future. Addressing the farmers, MLA Romit Kumar from the Atri region highlighted that using cow dung, cow urine, and other organic materials to create bio-fertilizers can help protect both the fields and their health.

He explained that natural farming is straightforward, allowing farmers to manage 15 to 20 acres of land using just one cow’s dung and urine.
