Bhubaneswar, July 30: Amid severe flooding in several districts of Odisha, the state government has ramped up efforts to address the impact of the disaster. These initiatives include rescue operations, restoring road connectivity and power supply, and assisting affected individuals.
On Thursday, the Odisha Water Resources Department issued an official statement confirming that all its officials and staff are actively engaged on the ground. Additionally, extra personnel have been deployed to sensitive areas for continuous monitoring and prompt action.
Senior field engineers are closely monitoring critical structures related to embankments, river systems, and flood management.
The department also reported that to strengthen preparedness, field engineers from minor irrigation, mega lift irrigation, quality assurance, and survey and investigation wings are fully equipped in the districts of Cuttack, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, and Puri. They are ready to mobilize for immediate ground operations if necessary.
The Chief Engineer of the Brahmani and Baitarani Basin System recently visited the overflow area of the Kharasuana River near the Mahadev Temple in the Ali Block to assess the current situation.
The department stated that sandbags have been successfully used to block the overflow area to prevent water flow. All field-level officials have been instructed to monitor conditions and implement rescue measures promptly when needed.
Meanwhile, the Housing and Urban Development Department has also accelerated emergency measures to tackle flooding and waterlogging caused by heavy rainfall, particularly in northern Odisha and districts like Balasore, Bhadrak, and Jajpur.
The department is prioritizing the safety of residents in urban areas, rapid water drainage, and relief operations.
Housing and Urban Development Minister Krishna Chandra Mahapatra emphasized that all relevant officials have been directed to remain on high alert and monitor the situation around the clock. Holidays for all personnel involved in flood management have been canceled, and a 24-hour departmental control room is closely tracking conditions and coordinating immediate actions as needed.
