Odisha Chief Minister Orders High-Level Inquiry After 1,678 Errors Found in School Textbooks

Bhubaneswar, June 17: Following the discovery of numerous errors in school textbooks published by the Odisha government, Chief Minister Mohan Chandra Majhi has taken serious note of the situation. He has directed immediate corrective actions and ordered a high-level investigation.

According to a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), a crucial review meeting was held at the Lok Seva Bhawan to address the issue. The meeting included School and Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond, Chief Secretary Anu Garg, and senior officials from various departments participating virtually.

During the meeting, the Chief Minister instructed that the identified mistakes in the textbooks be corrected without delay. He also ordered the formation of a three-member high-level committee, chaired by the Development Commissioner, to investigate the negligence and identify the officials or agencies responsible for the errors.

The Chief Minister has mandated the committee to submit its report within seven days. He made it clear that strict action would be taken against any guilty officials or institutions based on the inquiry report.

Majhi emphasized the necessity of maintaining high levels of accuracy and quality in educational materials, insisting that all identified errors be rectified promptly.

Reports indicate that approximately 1,678 errors have been found in new textbooks prepared for classes 1 to 8 under the Odisha Curriculum-2025 by SCERT. The majority of these errors, totaling 705, were recorded in the class 8 textbooks. Notably, the class 8 ‘Jigyasa’ book contained 294 errors, while significant mistakes were also found in Sanskrit (114), Social Science (25), Literature (31), as well as in English and Mathematics books.

Opposition parties, including the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and Congress, have sharply criticized the state government over this issue. They argue that the large number of errors in the new Odia textbooks reflects the declining standards of the education system under the BJP government.

The opposition has demanded the resignation of the School and Mass Education Minister and called for a public apology from the government regarding this matter.
