Wang Yi Highlights the Need for Effective UN Charter Enforcement

Beijing, June 17: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated on Wednesday that the current state of multilateralism appears ineffective. This is not due to the United Nations’ lack of importance, but rather a failure to respect and uphold its reputation and role. He emphasized that the return of lawlessness is not because the UN Charter has become obsolete, but because its protection has not been effectively enforced.

Wang Yi noted that humanity has faced unprecedented devastation due to lawlessness over the past 80 years. The United Nations was established to promote multilateralism, emerging from the ruins of two world wars.

He further stated that in light of ongoing global challenges, it is crucial to immediately implement the duties outlined in the UN Charter. This includes adhering to the principles of sovereign equality and international legal governance, opposing power politics, and supporting the UN’s central role. We must gather global equality through the UN to address the persistent shortcomings in global governance. Additionally, we should advance UN reforms to enhance representation and expression for countries in the Global South.

As the first country to sign the UN Charter, China is ready to enhance the UN’s reputation through global governance initiatives and collaborate with various nations for the UN’s revival.
