Odisha Chief Minister Highlights Achievements in Preventing Farmer Suicides

Bhubaneswar, June 12: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Chara Majhi on Thursday identified the revival of the Chief Minister‘s Grievance Redressal Cell and various farmer-centric initiatives as his administration’s two major achievements in preventing farmer suicides during his first two years in office.

Speaking at a press conference marking the completion of two years of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Odisha, Majhi stated that regular hearings at the Grievance Redressal Cell have successfully addressed various public issues.

Additionally, the BJP-led state government has strengthened the agricultural sector through initiatives like the Prosperous Farmer Scheme and financial assistance under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi and the Chief Minister’s Kisan Yojana. The Chief Minister emphasized that these efforts have improved farmers’ livelihoods, helping to prevent distress-related suicides in the state.

Majhi acknowledged that his two biggest challenges moving forward will be creating adequate employment opportunities for youth and combating the increasing threat of natural disasters like El Niño.

He further mentioned that his administration has adopted a zero-tolerance policy towards corruption. Referring to chit fund scams, he noted that the government has begun auctioning the properties of the accused and is taking steps to refund money to genuine depositors who present valid receipts.

The Chief Minister also highlighted that senior citizens in the state are receiving monthly pensions, reaffirming the government’s commitment to strengthening social security measures.

Addressing concerns regarding the Northern, Southern, and Western Odisha Development Councils, Majhi reiterated his government’s commitment to balanced regional development. He announced the formation of a task force with a budget of ₹200 crore for the Northern Odisha Development Council, while development activities under the Western Odisha Development Council are ongoing. Majhi acknowledged that conflicting demands from various districts have delayed the proposal to establish the Western Odisha Development Council headquarters in Sambalpur.
