New Delhi, July 29: Despite fears of job losses due to artificial intelligence (AI) and automation, India’s information technology (IT) sector has remained a significant employment generator. The central government reported on Wednesday that approximately 135,000 new jobs were created in the IT sector during the fiscal year 2025-26.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) stated in a written response to the Lok Sabha that the total workforce in the country’s IT industry reached 6 million by the end of the fiscal year. This indicates that, despite the growing influence of AI and automation, job opportunities in the sector continue to thrive.
The ministry acknowledged, citing estimates from NITI Aayog, that the IT sector is undergoing significant structural changes due to AI and automation, which may impact some routine and repetitive job roles.
According to the government, entry-level positions such as junior quality assurance and level-1 IT support are expected to be most affected by automation. However, the ministry also noted that the demand for new roles requiring specialized skills and expertise in next-generation technologies is rapidly increasing, ensuring continued job creation overall.
Industry body NASSCOM previously stated that the primary reason for employee restructuring in companies is the changing business models and economic cycles, rather than a permanent decline in employment within the tech sector.
A recent report from ADP Research indicated that about 30% of employees in India feel secure in their jobs. In this regard, India ranks third globally and first in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region.
The report revealed that only 18% of individuals across the APAC region consider their jobs secure. In India, perceptions of job security vary by job type. Among knowledge-based workers, 37% reported feeling secure, while this figure was 18% for skilled workers and 17% for those in repetitive roles.
Another recent report stated that generative AI is not eliminating jobs in India’s IT sector but is instead transforming work methods. This shift is enhancing productivity and increasing demand for employees with hybrid skills that combine both technical and business expertise.
