Bengaluru, July 29: The ongoing Cauvery water distribution dispute has drawn sharp criticism from BJP leader R. Ashoka towards the Congress government in Karnataka. Speaking on Wednesday, Ashoka accused the state government of failing to protect Karnataka’s interests despite paying lawyers a hefty fee of ₹300 crore. This negligence has led to an order directing the state to release 3,500 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu.
While addressing reporters in Davanagere, Ashoka stated that the directive from the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) is a direct result of the government’s carelessness and inadequate preparation for the legal proceedings.
He emphasized that the government’s failure regarding the Cauvery water-sharing issue is evident. The decision to release water to Tamil Nadu was made due to the government’s negligence and lack of proper consultation with legal experts. Despite the substantial legal fees, the government has not managed to safeguard the state’s interests.
Ashoka expressed concern over the impact of this order on Karnataka’s drinking water security, particularly for Bengaluru and other regions dependent on the Cauvery River. He warned that the future of drinking water for millions, including residents of Bengaluru, is now at risk. The government must strengthen its legal battle and defend Karnataka’s rights, even considering a change in the legal team if necessary.
He accused the Congress government of prioritizing political activities over public welfare, questioning its spending priorities. Ashoka alleged that while the government is willing to spend lavishly on political activities and publicity, it hesitates to assist farmers affected by drought and crop loss.
He stated, “Whenever it comes to providing relief to farmers struggling with drought and crop damage, the government claims it lacks funds. It is disgraceful that the government spends millions on political activities while hesitating to help those who feed the nation.”
This statement from the BJP leader comes amid a political uproar over the Cauvery water dispute. The Karnataka government has decided to challenge the CWRC’s order before the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA), citing significant rainfall shortages and insufficient water reserves in reservoirs.
