Bhubaneswar, September 3 (Daily Kiran) : The Odisha Assembly’s 17th legislative session is set to commence on September 22 and will continue until October 3, as announced by the assembly secretariat on Thursday. This session will feature nine working days, including eight dedicated to government business.
Due to public holidays, assembly proceedings will be suspended on September 26 and 27, and there will be no activities on October 2 for Gandhi Jayanti.
Anticipation is high for heated debates between the ruling party and the opposition, particularly regarding the recently passed Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Act, 2026. The opposition plans to challenge the state government, arguing that this amendment poses a threat to the interests of Odisha.
The Congress-led ‘India’ bloc has already declared a significant protest at the Odisha Assembly on September 29. The Biju Janata Dal (BJD), the main opposition party, has pledged to raise this issue at all levels, from local villages to the state assembly.
In a recent letter to MPs from the Bharatiya Janata Party, BJD leader and opposition head Naveen Patnaik described August 13, the day the Mines and Minerals Amendment Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha with BJP support, as a “black day” for Odisha.
In addition to this critical issue, the opposition is expected to address numerous publication errors found in the state’s new school textbooks, demanding the resignation of the Education Minister, Nityananda Gond.
Furthermore, both the BJD and Congress aim to bring attention to various pressing matters during the session, including those concerning farmers, women’s rights, law and order, and tribal rights.
