Odisha Assembly Speaker Calls All-Party Meeting to Ensure Peaceful Budget Session

Bhubaneswar, February 16: Odisha Assembly Speaker Surama Padhi convened an all-party meeting on Monday. During this meeting, both opposition and ruling party members were urged to cooperate for a smooth and peaceful budget session. The budget session is set to commence on Tuesday.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mukesh Mahaling, Biju Janata Dal (BJD) Chief Whip Pramila Malik, and Congress Legislative Party (CLP) leader Ram Chandra Kadam were among the senior leaders present.

After the meeting, Minister Mahaling addressed the media, stating, “It was unanimously decided that the house will be conducted in an orderly and systematic manner. The proceedings will follow the established rules, procedures, and agenda for the session.”

He informed that the session will begin with a speech from Odisha Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati. On February 20, Chief Minister Majhi will present the annual state budget for the fiscal year 2026-27.

Mahaling mentioned that after a 14-day discussion on grant demands, the appropriation bill for the 2026-27 budget will be introduced on March 31. Official sources indicate that the sixth session of the 17th Odisha Assembly will conclude on April 8.

This session will be conducted in two phases, comprising a total of 28 working days. According to the schedule, discussions on the thank-you motion will take place until February 19, following the Governor’s address on February 17.

Meanwhile, opposition leaders have stated that they will raise various issues in the Assembly, including farmers’ troubles and the Kotia issue, to highlight the government’s failures.

BJD Chief Whip Pramila Malik emphasized, “We will certainly bring up the problems faced by farmers across the state, including delays in paddy procurement and ongoing issues like ‘Kaatni-Chhantni’.”

On the other hand, the CLP leader mentioned that the party’s strategy will be decided after a meeting of Congress legislators scheduled for the evening.
