Noida, July 11: The negligence of the Noida Authority has once again resulted in the tragic loss of a young life. The death of 27-year-old engineer Aryan, caused by waterlogging and an open drain in Sector 58, has raised significant concerns about the authority’s operational practices.
Previously, there have been incidents in Sector 150 where engineer Yuvraj and a student from Amity University drowned in separate accidents. Despite these tragedies, there has been no noticeable improvement in safety measures. Reports indicate that Aryan, originally from Farrukhabad, was on his way to his office around 9 AM on Thursday. Due to overnight rainfall, the roads were flooded, and the slabs over the drains were completely submerged.
Witnesses reported that a section of the slab was broken and not visible due to the water. As Aryan passed by, he slipped and fell directly into the deep drain. Bystanders attempted to rescue him, but it was too late. His body was later recovered. Following the incident, Aryan’s family accused the Noida Authority and relevant departments of severe negligence. They argued that if the drains had been secured, the broken slabs replaced in time, and the waterlogging issue addressed, Aryan’s life could have been saved. The family has also expressed intentions to file a complaint with the police.
This is not the first time that negligence in safety measures has resulted in a fatality in Noida. Earlier this year, in January, engineer Yuvraj drowned after heavy rain filled a deep pit near a construction site in Sector 150. Following that incident, questions were raised about the authority’s operations. A committee was formed to investigate, and instructions were given to secure open pits, install barricades, and conduct regular inspections. However, the investigation report has yet to be made public.
Shortly after Yuvraj’s accident, another tragic event occurred when an Amity University student, along with friends, visited a construction site. The deep pit filled with rainwater had turned into a pond. The student entered the water to bathe but misjudged the depth and drowned. When notified, police and rescue teams struggled to recover his body. After this incident, directives were issued for safety barricading, warning signs, and immediate filling of such waterlogged pits.
These three serious incidents indicate a significant gap between the claims of the Noida Authority and the ground reality. After each major accident, promises are made to form investigation committees, launch safety campaigns, cover open drains, replace broken slabs, eliminate waterlogging, and conduct regular inspections. Yet, conditions revert to their previous state after some time. Local residents report that many sectors in the city still face issues with open drains, broken slabs, and deep pits at construction sites, especially during the rainy season.
They allege that despite complaints, timely action is not taken, resulting in the loss of innocent lives. Aryan’s death has once again raised the question of when accountability will be enforced for responsible officials. If safety directives had been diligently followed after the deaths of Yuvraj and the Amity student, it is possible that Aryan would still be alive today.
