Patna, September 3: Sanjay Kumar Jha, the National Executive President of the Janata Dal (United) and Member of Parliament, announced on Thursday that the water level of the Ganga River in Patna has surpassed the highest flood level recorded to date. Previously, the highest level was noted in 2016. Despite this, Patna remains safe, thanks to various initiatives undertaken by the state government over the past decade.
In a media briefing, Jha mentioned that he, along with former Chief Minister and National President of Janata Dal (United) Nitish Kumar, inspected several locations along the Ganga’s banks in Patna. They assessed the flood situation from the Raghopur Bridge to the Diha Ghat and from the JP Setu to the opposite bank of the Ganga. Following their site inspection, they gathered information from officials and provided necessary directives.
He emphasized that the recent natural disasters in Nepal are severe and such tragedies occur infrequently. Bihar’s geographical position means that heavy rainfall and natural events in Nepal significantly impact the rivers here. This time, substantial water has also flowed into Bihar’s rivers, including the Gandak.
Jha remarked that floodwaters do not recognize boundaries, whether it is Nepal or Bihar. In response to the influx of water from Nepal’s disaster, the state government has prepared proactively. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary and Deputy Chief Minister and Water Resources Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary, the administration and water resources department have effectively managed relief and rescue operations.
He praised the state government’s preparations, noting that this readiness has prevented any major unexpected crises in Bihar so far. However, flooding has caused difficulties in several areas, and some locations are experiencing erosion. The government is closely monitoring all affected regions, and the situation remains under control.
Jha stated that the Ganga’s water level in Patna has exceeded the highest flood level recorded in 2016. Nevertheless, the positive impact of flood management, riverbank protection, and other measures implemented over the past decade is evident. He highlighted that maintaining control in Patna despite such high water levels indicates that the safety measures established in previous years have strengthened.
He also noted that the water from the Punpun River has overflowed onto a road in one area, which will be repaired once the water recedes. Additionally, some areas in Bhagalpur are facing flooding and erosion issues, which the government is continuously monitoring. Jha mentioned that Nitish Kumar is personally reviewing conditions in Patna and surrounding areas while consistently gathering feedback from the administration.
