Imphal, September 5 (Daily Kiran) : The central government has announced the postponement of the house listing process for the 2027 census in Manipur until further notice. This decision was communicated through a notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs on Saturday.
According to the notification from the office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India, this decision was made under the powers conferred by the Census Act of 1948 and the Census Rules of 1990.
The notification states that an amendment has been made to a previous announcement dated January 7, 2026. While the house listing for the 2027 census will proceed in all other states and union territories, Manipur has been excluded from this process until a new announcement is made.
The notification was released on September 5, 2026, by Mrityunjay Kumar Narayan, the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India, from New Delhi.
Initially, the central government had included all states and union territories in the house listing for the 2027 census. However, with this latest decision, the process in Manipur will remain on hold, while other regions continue as scheduled.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has not provided specific reasons for excluding Manipur from the census process at this time. The state will await further notifications regarding when the house listing may begin.
Chief Minister N. Biren Singh expressed his support for the decision on social media, calling it a welcome and significant move for Manipur. He stated that the postponement reflects the central government’s serious attention to the genuine concerns of the people in the region. He also extended his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for their leadership and sensitivity.
Singh emphasized the government’s commitment to protecting the legitimate interests of the people of Manipur and to strengthening peace, security, and stability in the state.
