NIA Launches Investigation into Bhangar Bomb Case: 79 Raw Bombs Recovered Amid Conspiracy Fears

Kolkata, April 26: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken over the investigation of a case from the Kolkata Police in West Bengal, following orders from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

The Kolkata Police registered FIR number 62/2026 on April 25, 2026, which the NIA has now recorded as RC-25/2026/NIA/DLI on April 26, 2026. This case involves the recovery of 79 raw bombs and other objectionable materials in the Bhangar area. Police received information that these bombs were stockpiled in one location, posing a serious threat to the lives and property of nearby residents.

Initial investigations by the NIA suggest that this incident may not be a simple case of explosive recovery but could indicate a larger conspiracy. Alongside the raw bombs, other explosive materials were also found. The recovery occurred within the jurisdiction of the Bhangar division. The Kolkata Police had initially begun a preliminary investigation, but the NIA swiftly took over the case at the direction of the MHA.

The investigation will delve deeply into the conspiracy aspect. The agency is examining whether these bombs were intended for a major terrorist activity, electoral violence, or were being prepared for a criminal gang. In recent months, several cases of raw bomb recoveries have surfaced in West Bengal.

Typically, the NIA intervenes in such cases when there is a suspicion of national security threats or large-scale conspiracies. Currently, the NIA team is on-site collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses. The agency has urged all relevant parties to share any useful information regarding the case promptly.

Once the NIA completes its investigation, the accused will be presented in a special NIA court.
