Notorious Criminal Arrested in Meerut Police Encounter

Meerut, August 27: A late-night police encounter in the Teepinagar area of Meerut led to the arrest of a notorious criminal with a bounty of ₹5,000 on his head. The suspect, a member of the mobile theft gang known as the Sharad Goswami Gang, was injured during the confrontation.

The encounter occurred near the Mohmakpur bridge along the railway line. While on patrol, police noticed a suspicious individual hiding in the bushes. When officers attempted to apprehend him, the suspect opened fire with the intent to kill. In response, police returned fire, hitting the criminal in the leg. He was subsequently arrested in his injured state.

The arrested individual has been identified as Anas, son of Chunnan Qureshi, a resident of Makbara Diggi in the Railway Road area of Meerut. Authorities recovered a .315 bore pistol, a live cartridge, an empty cartridge, and stolen mobile phones from his possession.

According to police reports, Anas is a seasoned criminal involved in mobile theft and robbery. He was linked to a network that sold stolen mobile phones in Bangladesh and Nepal. Additionally, he was wanted in a case registered in Jaipur, Rajasthan, where police had announced a reward for his capture. Multiple cases of theft and robbery have also been filed against him in various police stations in Meerut.

Brahmpuri Circle Officer Ram Prakash commented on the incident, stating, “During a night patrol in the Teepinagar area, police spotted an individual hiding in the bushes near the Mohmakpur bridge. Upon suspicion, when approached, he fired at the police with the intent to kill. In self-defense, police returned fire, injuring him in the leg. He has been sent to the district hospital for treatment, and further actions are underway.”
