Guwahati, September 29 (Daily Kiran) : Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma intensified his criticism of the Congress party during a campaign rally for the upcoming Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election on Tuesday. He highlighted the changes in the political landscape under the leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and referenced his government’s recruitment initiatives.
Speaking to reporters, Sarma posed a question to the public: why were government jobs not provided without payment during Congress’s tenure? He emphasized that citizens are now asking why they can secure jobs without bribes under his administration, contrasting this with the previous Congress regime.
Sarma further noted that Congress leaders are facing unexpected reactions in minority-dominated areas during their campaign efforts. He remarked that he has never witnessed such behavior, where people follow Congress leaders closely when they visit these regions.
His comments come as the Nagaon by-election approaches, scheduled for October 6. The seat became vacant after former Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi resigned and joined the BJP. The BJP-led alliance has nominated former bureaucrat Devashish Sharma, while Congress has put forward Sibamoni Bora. All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Badruddin Ajmal is also contesting.
Sarma has been actively campaigning for Sharma, addressing numerous public meetings throughout the constituency, including rallies in Raha and Samaguri.
Political tensions have surfaced during the election campaign. Congress leaders previously alleged that their convoy was attacked while campaigning in Samaguri, with Sarma attributing the incident to internal disagreements within Congress.
As the voting date approaches, issues such as employment, development, governance, and political representation for various communities have emerged as key topics. Both major parties have ramped up their campaign efforts in the Nagaon constituency.
