New Delhi, July 21: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken cognizance of reports alleging that students at a government school in Sawai Madhopur, Rajasthan, were subjected to abuse after a student reported losing ₹1,000. Teachers allegedly conducted searches, physically assaulted the students, and coerced them into removing their clothing.
The NHRC stated that if these reports are accurate, it constitutes a serious violation of the victims’ human rights. Consequently, the commission has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary of Rajasthan, demanding a detailed report within two weeks.
According to media reports, the incident occurred at a government senior secondary school in Lively village. A teacher claimed that ₹1,000 had gone missing, prompting searches of female students from the 9th and 11th grades, during which they were reportedly forced to undress.
Reports also allege that two teachers physically assaulted the students during the searches, although no money was found. Upon returning home, the students informed their parents about the incident, leading to a large gathering of parents at the school the following day to protest.
In response, the Rajasthan School Education Department suspended Senior Teacher Saraswati Meena based on a report from the Chief Block Education Officer (C.B.E.O.). Additionally, Vocational Education Instructor Vandana Sharma was removed from her position and sent back to the service agency.
The Rajasthan School Education Department later stated that it is monitoring schools to ensure student safety and has directed officials to enhance oversight across educational institutions in the state.
Established under the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, the NHRC is an autonomous statutory body symbolizing India’s commitment to promoting and protecting human rights. Its primary role is to safeguard and advocate for human rights, which encompass rights related to life, liberty, equality, privacy, and dignity, guaranteed by the Constitution or included in international treaties enforceable in Indian courts.
