New Delhi, 1 January: The central government on Thursday issued notifications for the appointment and transfer of Chief Justices of several High Courts based on recommendations by the Supreme Court Collegium headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dhananjaya Y. Chandrachud.

According to a notification from the Ministry of Law and Justice, exercising powers under Article 222 of the Constitution, the President has approved the transfer of Justice Soumen Sen, Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court, to Kerala High Court. Justice Sen will take charge as Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court from 9 January 2026, following the retirement of the incumbent Chief Justice Nitin Madhukar Jamdar.

The notification stated, “Under the powers conferred by Clause (1) of Article 222 of the Constitution of India and on the advice of the Chief Justice of India, Justice Soumen Sen, Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court, is transferred and directed to assume charge as Chief Justice of Kerala High Court.”

In a separate notification, the President appointed Justice Sangam Kumar Sahu, Judge of Odisha High Court, as Chief Justice of Patna High Court under Article 217 of the Constitution.

Another notification approved the appointment of Justice Revati Prashant Mohite Dere, Judge of Bombay High Court, as Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court. This appointment comes following the transfer of Justice Soumen Sen from Meghalaya High Court.

These appointments and transfers follow the Supreme Court Collegium’s recommendations made in its meeting held on 18 December 2025, proposing promotions and transfers of several High Court Chief Justices.

However, the government has yet to act on two recommendations by the Collegium. The appointment of Justice Manoj Kumar Gupta of Allahabad High Court as Chief Justice of Uttarakhand High Court, effective 9 January after the retirement of Chief Justice G. Narendra, is still pending. Similarly, the appointment of Justice M.S. Sonak from Bombay High Court as Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court remains under consideration.
