Nepals Parliamentary Elections: Voters Urged to Cast Ballots Fearlessly

Kathmandu, March 5: Nepal is set to hold parliamentary elections on Thursday. In this context, Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari has urged voters across the country to exercise their voting rights without fear.

Voting will take place to elect 275 members of the House of Representatives, the lower house of the federal parliament. Of these seats, 165 will be filled through the First-Past-The-Post (FPTP) system, while 110 seats will be allocated via a proportional representation system.

These elections are taking place in the aftermath of the Gen-Z uprising that occurred on September 8-9 last year, which, according to government estimates, resulted in the loss of 77 lives and caused damage exceeding 84 billion Nepali rupees to both private and public property.

Following the Gen-Z movement, there was initial uncertainty about the direction of the Himalayan nation. However, under the leadership of Prime Minister Sushila Karki, the interim government has steered the country towards elections, indicating a return to a democratic path with the upcoming voting.

In his message, Ram Prasad Bhandari stated that all necessary preparations for conducting and managing the elections have been completed. He encouraged voters to utilize their voting rights.

According to the Election Commission, voting will occur nationwide from 7 AM to 5 PM on Thursday.

He emphasized, “Elections are the foundation of representative governance and provide people the right to be governed through their chosen representatives. Therefore, I urge all voters to confidently reach their polling stations and cast their votes.”

He further stated that the commission is fully prepared to conduct elections in a clean, independent, fair, and fear-free environment.

In a separate statement, the election body reported that all necessary election materials, including ballots and ballot boxes, have been delivered to polling stations across the country.

Preparations for the construction and management of polling centers, facilities for persons with disabilities and women, and the deployment of election personnel have also been completed.

According to the Election Commission, over 18.9 million registered voters are eligible to exercise their voting rights, comprising 9.66 million men and 9.24 million women.

The commission noted that there are 3,406 candidates contesting under the FPTP system, while a list of 3,135 candidates has been released for the proportional representation system.
